Volkswagen is taking a holistic approach to decarbonisation, which is why its way to ZERO goes way beyond vehicle electrification to include the entire vehicle life cycle. The corporation is setting four central levers in motion:
- The first lever is the continued acceleration of the electrification of the product portfolio.
- The second lever is the decarbonisation of supply chains and production, responsible for around half of an electric car’s total carbon emissions.
- The third lever is the consistent use of green energy during the service life; this will address the remaining 50 percent of emissions.
- The fourth lever is the recycling of batteries.
Volkswagen regards the way to ZERO as a genuine competitive advantage rather than a cost factor. In the future, employees, customers and investors will prioritise companies who put social responsibility at the heart of everything they do. Sustainability will become the decisive factor for long-term business success. However, one thing that is clear is that Volkswagen will not be able to decarbonise mobility single-handedly. This task requires the worlds of politics, business and society to pull together, find good ideas and make bold investments.
