Sustainable innovation and a regional partner: Volkswagen Group Innovation is working on the next generation of ecological materials for vehicle interiors. The raw material for an innovative imitation leather is supplied by the Braunschweig-based coffee roasting house Heimbs.

We’re looking at various materials that will enable us to increase the organic percentage of imitation leather in the short term.

Dr. Martina Gottschling, researcher at Volkswagen Group Innovation, is working with her team to develop the idea of “coffee leather”.

Operations Manager Ralf Schwarzenberg is proud of the fact that Heimbs still roasts coffee using the original, individually produced machines of 1954 to this day.

Tests are promising so far

In the tests so far, the durability of coffee leather seems to be comparable with tried and tested forms of imitation leather.

Use in series production a possibility in just a few years

Volkswagen’s research into non-animal leather substitutes with a high organic percentage from coffee silverskins features in a film production for German broadcaster ZDF’s “Plan B” tv programme. Watch here the show from 10/14/2021 about “sustainable leather” (German only).
